I designated September as my catch-up month considering it's been one hectic summer! I recently shot my most lucrative short film, earlier this September called In Bloom. And because most of the month was dedicated to that shoot, I wanted to lay back and catch-up on some films and tv series I've been FOMOing on like Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2, the original 1990's It, Issa Rae's Insecure & Donald Glover's Atlanta.

I'm slowly realizing that my go-to activity for decompressing is binge-watching a tv series. There are so many incredible series out there that I've yet to watch but I'm so glad I finally got to see the two most buzzed about & award-winning shows, Insecure and Atlanta. Both deserve all the praise and views and I will for sure to tuning in season after season! What are your September favorites?

I've been MIA all of summer (See Life Update Video) so I thought I share a cumulative favorites video of the summer! Despite being gone, I've watched many films and binged on various tv shows which you can all see in my newly made Letterboxd! I tried a free month of Film Struck and I absolutely loved it! I got to watch so many classic films that I've been meaning to watch like Lady Snowblood, Thelma and Louise, and so much more! I also went to many film events like LA Film Festival, Okja screening with Bong Joon-ho & Tarantino, and even Harry Potter @ Hollywood Bowl! & of course, tons of action films with incredible badass femmes kicking ass in Atomic Blonde and The Villainess! May was a super busy month! I was working on various film sets, attending Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and celebrating my Birthday, hence why I tuned into more Netflix shows than films. Aziz Ansari's Master of None, Season 2 finally came out and it was one hell of a season that surely revolutionized episodic television. Next up, I wanted to see what the hype was all about with cult-favorite, Twin Peaks. It's as creepy as any David Lynch film and I have no idea when I'll have the guts to finish season 2! Last but not least, Hasan Minhaj's comedy special, Homecoming King has got to be one of the most poignant and powerful stand-up shows I've ever seen. Netflix is killin it! April was a great month for blockbusters and indie films alike! Of course as a car movie enthusiast, I had to watch The Fate of the Furious aka Fast 8! Charlize Theron was such a badass villain, I can't wait to see what she does in the next two films! Long time Jeremy Saulnier collaborator, Macon Blair, debuted with his directorial feature called I Don't Feel At Home in This World Anymore which is the most realistic revenge film I've seen yet! To cap the month off, I went to see the guns blazing film, Free Fire starring the beautiful and talented Brie Larson. Overall I say that April was a solid month! What were your April Film Favorites?

Considering that March is post-Oscar season, it's always a good month knowing how all the good films start rolling out! The first film to really knock it outta the park was James Mangold's Logan. People have been saying it's one of the best Superhero films and I gotta agree. March was also the month where I made a whooping 6 videos including my film review for The Belko Experiment and Power Rangers! It's also David Cronenberg's birthday so I had to revisit a classic, Crash! And last but not least, Shudder has been a really superb streaming site for hardcore horror enthusiast where they have coveted films from Ken Russell's The Devils to new releases like Prevenge! I watched the Jean Rollin's vampire film, Lips of Blood and it oozed with the kind of european horror that I didn't know I needed!

February was an exciting month for films! I realize that 3/4 of these films are horror films which explains why I haven't been sleeping so well these days. Started off the month with a bang with the all female-directed, horror anthology film, XX, which feature 4 killer tales by 4 killer directors. Then I was entranced by M. Night Shyamalan's split-personality film, Split, starring James McAvoy like we've never seen him before! There was the Oscar nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro that offered a refreshing perspective on not only the history of racism in America but the possible solution for progression. And then I capped off the month with the uber haunting and nuanced political satire, Get Out. All these films are so timely and executed to perfection, go watch them!

As most people know, January is a slow month for film as it is the month sandwiched between the release of the Oscar-nominated films and the actual Oscars. So I did what most people do and caught up with all the award-nominated films like Hidden Figures and Ava DuVernay's The 13th documentary. Both films are essential viewing as it focuses on America's racial inequality and shows how we need to work together to bring change. And when I wasn't trying to help change the world, I was chilling in bed and watching MTV's Daria, which is exactly the kind of sardonic humor we all need to survive these dire times.

December is a time to just wind down from the hectic year and just chill with your family. In the beginning of the month, I saw the fantastic Moana that reminded me why Disney films reigned supreme. A friend recommended a British show on Netflix called Chewing Gum, which is about a 24-year-old girl who is trying to lose her virginity. It's one of the most hilarious shows I've seen as of recently, it had me ROFLing. Literally. And how can I forget Gareth Edward's Rogue One that brings the darkness and realness to the Star Wars Universe to show that there is no battle without casualties of war. And to cap off the year of 2016, La La Land captured my heart especially because of it's message of the sacrifices and compromises that need to be made in order to achieve one's dreams. And ain't that the truth!

October was by far my favorite month as it was Beyond Fest (see reviews) and Halloween all in one month so you know it was absolutely bonkers! Beyond Fest is LA's biggest and baddest genre film festival in LA and even though it's my 4th year attending the festival, as always it reigned chaos! In addition to watching as many horror films as my brain can handle (ie: 10 Horror Masterpieces), I saw breathtaking and humanistic films like Denis Villeneuve's Arrival, The Eagle Huntress, Moonlight, and We Are X! Many of these films possessed a universal message about the inspiring power of the human spirit and a powerful look at just what it means to be human. As you can see, October did not disappoint!

Like August, September was about straight chilling and watching films without the obligation of attending so many screenings and doing reviews. So I decided to go back to the film canons that are in the Criterion Collection and watched John Cassavetes' A Woman Under the Influence and Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Double Life of Veronique. Both were exceptional & must-watch films. Along with those, my other favorites were Andrew Dominick's One More Time with Feeling, the ultra feel-good film, Queen of Katwe, and iconic Asian American film, Chan is Missing! August could possibly have been my favorite month this year because I literally tried to do nothing! Which most likely means, I still watched a lot of stuff and went to plenty of events which I did including Guillermo del Toro's At Home with Monsters Exhibit at LACMA and Sundance Next Fest! At Sundance Next Fest I watched So Yong Kim's Lovesong, The Greasy Strangler, and Under the Shadow. I can't wait for everyone to watch it when it comes out! And as someone who rarely watches T.V., I binged on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and my new favorite, Mr. Robot. I'm going to have to do an individual video for these two shows because they're just too good! What were your August Favorites?

My July Film Favorites is here! I watched so many amazing films this month that were action-packed, anxiety-inducing, and straight out inventive! For my film favorites, I picked Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond (see review), Yeon Sang-ho's Train to Busan and no joke, Ghostbusters! I also went to Outfest which is L.A.'s biggest and best LGBTQ+ film festival where I saw Andrew Ahn's Spa Night (see trailer), The Intervention, and Kiki.
